New Fire Sprinkler Regulations – In Consultation
New fire sprinkler regulations are being considered under government plans to improve fire safety regulations recently outlined by Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick.
Consultation on improved fire protection which will reduce the building height where Fire Sprinklers need to be fitted from the current 30 meters down to 18 meters.
Current guidelines, require sprinkler systems in buildings of 30 metres (98ft) – approximately 10 floors – or higher, but ministers will decide whether to decrease this to 18 metres (59ft) – approximately six floors in new fire sprinkler regulations.
The Home Office are creating a new Protection Board to make sure building owners do not ignore fire safety rules – as well as ensuring all risks in buildings are being identified.
Around £10 Million a year will assist the Board which will provide comprehensive building inspections in England by 2021.
The primary aim is also to ensure building owners keep up with latest regulations.
Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick outline safety regulations to introduce sprinkler systems in more high-rise buildings.
Mr Jenrick said an extra £4 million will be made available to local authorities to help, with another £10 million annually for councils to help with the work.
He also said that a new protection board – working with the Home Office and National Fire Chiefs Council – will also be established, aimed at speeding up building inspections and all high-rise buildings will have been inspected “no later than 2021”.
